Despite its age, the course still compares favourably with some of the newer layouts and remains a firm favourite of golfers in Pattaya

One of the oldest golf courses in the Pattaya area, having been built in 1958 and last updated in the late 1980s, Bangpra International Golf Club is a tricky challenge with some tasty par-3s and fairways lined with mature trees that stand as a testament to the longevity of the course.

The course is best remembered for its long par 3's, all of which measure more than 180 yards from the blue tees, with the 17th a particularly daunting challenge given it plays more than 200 yards with water most of the way to the green.

The tighter, more undulating front nine also features some notable longer holes. The par-5 5th has a green partially protected by a water hazard, requiring accurate placement with your approach, while the longest hole on the course, the par-5 7th, measures a massive 623 from the back tees. Fortunately, most of it is downhill so it’s just about reachable in regulation for most of us.

The back nine, with its flatter, wide open fairways with only light rough along the edges, is a bit of a let-down after the front nine. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you'll score well as there are a number of difficult holes. Two par 3s, the 12th and the 17th, both demand long tee shots over water, while a number or the holes in between require water carries to elevated greens which tend to throw balls off into the surrounding swales.

Thankfully, the last is a fairly sedate affair with a wide open fairway, which should mean you end the round in good spirits.

Unusually, the excellent clubhouse offers Japanese-style baths, and Japanese cuisine is available from the restaurant, so even if your round has not gone according to plan you can still relax and enjoy a great meal.

Despite its age, Bangpra International Golf Club comes highly recommended and should form part of any Pattaya golf holiday.
