Big Buddha Pattaya (Wat Phra Yai)

Big Buddha Pattaya: The Golden Buddha Above the Bay

At the top of Pratumnak Hill, between Pattaya and Jomtien, an 18-metre golden Buddha watches over the city. Wat Phra Yai, better known as Big Buddha Hill, is Pattaya's most famous temple and one of its best viewpoints. Climb the grand staircase lined with golden nagas, admire the statues around the giant Buddha, and enjoy sweeping views over Jomtien and the sea. A peaceful, spiritual and free visit, just a short drive from the city centre.

What to Expect

The Big Buddha: a golden seated Buddha 18 metres tall, built in 1977 and the largest Buddha image in the Chonburi region.

The naga staircase: a long staircase flanked by two golden nagas, the mythical serpents of Thai Buddhism, leading to the top of the hill.

Buddhas of the days: around the main statue, seven Buddha images represent each day of the week. Thais pray at the one matching their day of birth.

The view: from the edge of the terrace, panoramic views over Jomtien Beach and the Gulf of Thailand.

A Chinese shrine: halfway down the hill, a small Chinese temple with a garden, a pond and colourful statues.
