Rompho: Jomtien's Market by Day, Bar Village by Night

One block, two lives. By day, Rompho is a covered local market on Jomtien 2nd Road where Jomtien residents queue for vegetables, herbs and grilled chicken. From the late afternoon, the same block turns into a strip of more than fifty open-air beer bars, pool tables and street-food stalls that runs past midnight. Five hundred metres inland from Jomtien Beach, it is the nightlife heart of Jomtien for expats and long-stay visitors, cheaper and calmer than anything in central Pattaya.

What to Expect

The layout: a long open-air block of bars built around lanes and a central square, with the market hall at one end and Jomtien 2nd Road along the front. You walk in from the road or from the car park at the southern end, and the whole complex is visible from the middle.

The bars: classic open-front beer bars, a counter, a few stools and a pool table in almost every one, plus a handful of sports bars with the matches on screen and a few bars with live music. Many are run by expats, and the pool tables are free in most of them.

The food: street-food stalls set up on the square in the evening, and a few bar-restaurants in the complex serve Thai and Western dishes, so dinner and drinks happen in the same place.

The crowd: Jomtien's expats and retirees, long-stay visitors, and locals from the market side. Friendly, unhurried, and very much a regulars' scene where people know each other by name.

The rhythm: market from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, bars from the late afternoon, busiest between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM, and the last drinks past midnight.

  • Opening hours: market 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM; bars from the late afternoon until past midnight, hours vary by venue

  • Getting there: about 5 minutes by car from Walking Street or Soi Pattaya Land, or a few minutes from Jomtien Beach via Soi 5 or Soi 7. Bolt or Grab is the easiest option, or ask our team to arrange your transport.

  • Age: the legal drinking age in Thailand is 20. The market and food stalls are open to all.

Good to Know

  • Come early: Rompho peaks between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM, earlier than central Pattaya. Arrive for dinner at the stalls and you get the best of it.

  • Free pool: most tables are free to play, and the regulars are happy to take on a visitor. A drink for your opponent is the usual courtesy.

  • Check prices first: most bars display a drinks list, and prices are among the lowest in Pattaya. Drinks for staff are priced separately from your own.

  • Cash is simpler: stalls and small bars rarely take cards.

  • Mind the road: Jomtien 2nd Road is fast and busy at night. Cross with care, and use a taxi rather than a scooter on the way back.
