Khao Chi Chan: The Golden Buddha Carved Into the Mountain
Visible from miles away, a giant golden Buddha shines on the face of a limestone cliff south of Pattaya. Khao Chi Chan, also known as Buddha Mountain, was created in 1996 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of King Bhumibol's accession to the throne. The image was laser-engraved into the rock and inlaid with gold, making it one of the largest Buddha images of its kind in the world. A peaceful, impressive and free visit, set in landscaped gardens.
What to Expect
The Buddha image: a seated Buddha in the earth-touching posture, about 130 metres high and 70 metres wide, glowing in gold on the cliff face.
A peaceful park: shady gardens, ponds and small shrines at the foot of the mountain, ideal for a quiet walk.
A sacred place: Thai visitors come to pay their respects, and donation boxes help maintain the site.
At the entrance: small restaurants, food stalls and souvenir shops.
