Soi Buakhao: Pattaya's Beating Heart

If Walking Street is Pattaya's neon postcard, Soi Buakhao is its beating heart. Running inland from Central Pattaya Road to South Pattaya Road, parallel to Second Road, it is not an entertainment strip but a real city street: hotels, restaurants, pool halls, massage shops, cafés, a market twice a week, and a very large number of bars. It has a daytime life of its own, happy-hour boards chalked up by noon, and a nightlife that runs until the early hours, with Tree Town, Myth Night Bar Beer Town, LK Metro, Soi Honey and Soi Boomerang all branching off the street itself.

What to Expect

The street: long, narrow and busy, with bar stools on the pavement where there is a pavement, baht buses running up and down, and new bars replacing old ones overnight. Scruffy, energetic and impossible to keep down.

The bars: everything from open-front beer bars with a pool table to sports bars, live-music venues, a reggae bar and a few clubs. Many carry British names and a British crowd. Prices are local rather than beachfront: Soi Buakhao is a couple of streets back from the sea, and it shows on the bill.

The complexes: two open-air bar villages sit side by side in the middle of the street. Tree Town on Soi Buakhao itself, and right behind it Myth Night Bar Beer Town, just as big, which you can also enter from Second Road opposite Central Festival. Each has its own page.

The side streets: small sois branch off and each has its own character. LK Metro is the compact go-go and bar district, reached from Soi Buakhao via Soi Diana. Soi Diana itself links Soi Buakhao to Second Road, with beer gardens along the way. Soi Honey, next to LK Metro, is the adult-oriented one, with go-go bars and lounges. Soi Chaiyapoon, nicknamed Soi Pothole, mixes bars, a whisky lounge and gentlemen's clubs. Soi Made in Thailand is the classic open-front beer bar lane, running on behind Tree Town into Myth Night Bar Beer Town. Soi Lengkee leans towards food and late bars. And off the southern half, Soi Boomerang has its own go-go bars, clubs and restaurants.

The crowd: expats, long-stay travellers and repeat visitors, with a daytime mix of locals doing their shopping. The friendliest and least pretentious nightlife crowd in Pattaya.

The rhythm: cafés and restaurants from the morning, bars from the afternoon, the street at full speed from the evening until 2:00 or 3:00 AM.

  • Address: Soi Buakhao, between Central Pattaya Road and South Pattaya Road, Central Pattaya, Nong Prue, Bang Lamung, Chon Buri 20150

  • Opening hours: restaurants from the morning, most bars from the afternoon until 2:00 or 3:00 AM, hours vary by venue

  • Soi Buakhao Market: Tuesday and Friday, from early morning until 4:00 or 5:00 PM

  • Getting there: about 10 minutes by car from Walking Street or Soi Pattaya Land. Baht buses run along the street itself. Bolt or Grab is the easiest option, or ask our team to arrange your transport.

  • Age: the legal drinking age in Thailand is 20. Some venues on the side streets are adults only.

Good to Know

  • Market days: on Tuesdays and Fridays the market at the southern end fills with stalls selling clothes, fruit, spices and street food. Go in the morning before the heat.

  • Happy hours: most bars chalk up their happy-hour board around midday. Afternoon drinks are the best value in town.

  • Mind the road: no pavements and constant traffic. Walk on the inside and keep an eye on motorbikes.

  • Check prices first: most bars display a drinks list. In gentlemen's clubs and lounges on the side streets, ask before you settle in.

  • One evening, no taxi: Tree Town, Myth Night Bar Beer Town, LK Metro, Soi Honey and Soi Boomerang all open onto Soi Buakhao, so you can cover the whole area on foot.
